The timeless black-and-white aesthetic was seamlessly woven throughout the celebration. What is a black tie wedding?

A black-tie wedding is a formal and elegant event where guests are expected to dress in upscale evening attire. It is one of the most formal dress codes for weddings, often held in grand venues like ballrooms, historic estates, or luxury hotels. Corissa and Cordell chose one of the most historic wedding venues in Milwaukee to host their black tie evening – St. James 1868.

Black-Tie Attire for Guests:

  • Men: A tuxedo with a black bow tie, a white dress shirt, black dress shoes, and optional accessories like cufflinks or a pocket square.
  • Women: A floor-length evening gown or a sophisticated cocktail dress in a formal style. Elegant accessories, heels, and polished hair/makeup complete the look.

Black-Tie Wedding Style & Decor:

  • Color Palette: Typically classic and refined—black, white, gold, deep jewel tones, or soft neutrals.
  • Venue: Elegant and upscale locations like historic mansions, luxury hotels, or grand ballrooms.
  • Decor: Lavish floral arrangements, chandeliers, candles, and high-end table settings.
  • Formal Elements: A sit-down dinner with plated courses, a live band or string quartet, and an overall polished atmosphere.

St. James 1868 Wedding Venue

When planning a black tie wedding, finding an upscale and luxurious venue is a must. The backdrop to all of your photos and videos is the venue, therefore ensuring your vision aligns with the venue’s aesthetic is something to keep in mind. Known for its beauty, historic significance, and elegant spaces, St. James 1868 in downtown Milwaukee is a perfect venue for a black tie event.

What Your Guests Wear Matters…

Contrary to popular belief, what your guests wear to your wedding can ultimately make or break the aesthetic you are going for. Black-tie weddings demand for formal attire. Men in tuxedos and women in floor-length gowns create a visually stunning effect. It doesn’t just stop at formal attire though. Elegant fabrics like silk, satin, and velvet, along with accessories such as jewelry, clutches and heels enhance the occasion’s formality and can add a touch of sparkle and glamour to the overall look.

Fine Dining & Overall Experience

If you’re going for a black-tie wedding incorporating a fine dining experience is a must. Multi-course plated meals, gourmet cuisine, top-shelf bar, and exceptional service will showcase the event’s sophistication. Extravagant and show-stopping floral arrangements are a hallmark of a black-tie wedding. Along with florals, personalized touches such as custom stationery or favors can also add a touch of intimacy and reflect the couple’s personal style.
